Omni:Desk
Background
With ever-rising housing costs and increasing demands on living spaces, designers have a responsibility to help consumers adapt.
The number of people working from home has risen dramatically since Covid-19, and as a result work space has been encroaching on the home, exacerbating already tight living spaces.
Product Goals
With this data in mind, the goal is to design a configurable modular desk to allow consumers to fill specific and changing needs over many years. In accomplishing this goal, there are three pillars:
Prototyping
Prototyping began with cardboard model explorations
Second round prototyping focused on assembly methodology and scale model user testing, including user surveys.
The final prototype is a modular flat-packable desk manufactured from red oak, 3D-printed PLA, and steel internal hardware.
Assembly can be done by one person, and requires only the included tool and a Phillips head screwdriver.
The Omni:Desk is a modular desk system designed to be manufactured from hardwood or high-grade plywood, with machined or injection-molded plastic hardware.
Flat-packable and easily assembled with a screwdriver and included tool, the Omni:Desk system is easily adaptable to the demands of a variety of lifestyles.
The Vision
The true end goal of this design is to create a system of high quality re-usable parts that can follow the consumer through life, adapting to whatever needs that may arise.
Additional parts would be available for the consumer to adapt the system’s use for current demands. Ideally, a return and refurbishing program would be in place to create a more circular lifecycle for the product.
